Jäger, Johann Wilhelm Abraham

Jäger, Johann Wilhelm Abraham. Militär. Buchhändler und Verleger. Kartograf. * 18.8.1718 Nürnberg, † 2.9.1790 Ffm.

Seit 1745 als Konstabler, dann als Feuerwerker bei der Ffter Artillerie. Seit 1748 Inhaber einer Pulverfabrik und einer Ölmühle in Hanau. 1757 Rückkehr nach Ffm. Ingenieur-Lieutenant und Zeugmeister, dann (1758) Artillerie-Lieutenant und schließlich (1764) Capitain-Lieutenant bei der Artillerie. 1762 erwarb J. die Hutter-Walther’sche Buchhandlung hinter dem Pfarreisen am Dom, die seine Frau Margaretha Eleonora J., geb. Schmid (auch: Schmidt; 1722-1775), führte. Zudem betrieb er später eine Papiermühle in Hanau, um das für sein Kartenwerk nötige Papier in Großformaten selbst herstellen zu können.
J. zog sich 1782 völlig aus dem Geschäft zurück und wirkte fortan ausschließlich als Kartograf. Seit seiner Rückkehr nach Ffm. arbeitete er schon an einem „Großen Atlas von Deutschland“, der 1789 mit 81 Blättern im eigenen Verlag J.s komplett vorlag. Erstmals waren darin alle Karten in demselben Maßstab angefertigt und konnten zu einer großen Karte zusammengesetzt werden, wodurch die Arbeit mit verschiedenen Spezialkarten nicht mehr nötig war. Jahrzehntelang gehörte J.s Atlas daher zu den meistverwendeten Kartenwerken, vor allem beim Militär. Goethe benutzte ihn bei der „Campagne in Frankreich“ (1792) und erwähnte das Werk auch in „Dichtung und Wahrheit“.

Die „J.’sche Buch-, Papier- und Landkartenhandlung“ bestand bis 1913 unter der Leitung von J.s Nachkommen in Ffm., wenn auch die Papiermühle, inzwischen ein bedeutendes Unternehmen, seit 1887 als gesonderte Firma geführt wurde.
